Defining the requirements of unique distribution units
Andrew Whyatt, Electrical Engineering Manager with CEENorm U.K. Ltd, considers the characteristics that need defining when asked to design a custom built socket distribution system.
What size cable can you use with each socket, plug & connector entry
16 amp 4mm cable size
32 amp 10mm maximum
63amp 16mm maximum
125 amp 50mm
What IP ratings do you cover?
The CEENorm U.K. range offers a choice of IP44 (splashproof) or IP67 (watertight) for most products. The exceptions are: All 125A products are IP67. All extra low voltage (50V or less) products are available at IP44 only.
What does IP protection mean?
IP stands for "International Protection" or "Ingress Protection" (Protection against penetration)
The IP-Code consists of two digits: The first digit indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against access to hazardous parts (e.g. electrical conductors, moving parts) and the ingress of solid foreign objects. The second digit indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against harmful ingress of water.
What does the Earth ‘Clock’ Position mean?
To prevent the possibility of connecting items of different voltages or frequencies with one another by mistake, the earthtube (or pin) position is designated in accordance with the voltage or frequencies in such a way to make this impossible.
Note: It follows that on products with pins i.e. plugs and appliance inlets, the earth pin is reversed so that it fits into the correct earth tube position socket.
What is the standard of the plugs and sockets?
BSEN. 60309-2; this is an international standard for plugs, socket-outlets and couplers for industrial purpose
Do you not stock Couplers?
Yes, we do - we refer to these as Connectors
When counting main contact pins should you include the Pilot Core?
No, the Pilot Core should NOT be counted as a main pin
